She has spent her entire career as a high school band director, working her way through several programs across Ohio — building competitive ensembles and writing drill for winds, percussion, color guard, and front ensemble at every stop. She has distributed thousands of dot books, run hundreds of band camps, and stayed up far too many summer nights trying to coax usable output out of software that was clearly not built with her in mind.

DrillWeaver is the tool she always wished existed. She didn't set out to build a software company — she set out to save her summer. What grew out of that frustration is a platform designed from the inside out by someone who has lived every problem it solves.

Two Decades of Frustration

Our founder has spent over twenty years on the sideline as a high school band director in Ohio — working across multiple programs, building competitive ensembles through countless seasons, band camps, and state performances. In all that time, one thing never got easier: building drill.

She tried them all. Pyware. EnVision. MarchingMapper. DrillFlo. Each one promised to streamline the process. Each one delivered something different: a steep learning curve that ate up weeks of summer, a bloated interface that felt like navigating a 1998 tax form, annual subscription fees that climbed every renewal cycle, and — when something inevitably went wrong — a support inbox that responded three days later with a link to a twelve-year-old PDF manual.

The performance issues were just as bad. Laggy canvas rendering on a mid-range laptop. Crashes mid-session that wiped unsaved work. Export dialogs that took minutes to generate a simple field chart. Software so hungry for resources that she couldn't run anything else alongside it without the whole machine grinding to a halt.

When Paper Beats Software

For years, her go-to solution was a legal pad and a pencil. Not because she was technologically averse — she runs a modern program with electronic metronomes, digital audio, and a live-streaming setup for competitions — but because the pencil was simply faster. She could sketch a formation in thirty seconds. She could erase and try again in three. There was no loading screen, no license validation dialog, no mandatory update that reset her workspace settings.

The problem with paper, of course, was everything that comes after the sketch: transcribing coordinates by hand, distributing dot books to 80-plus performers, tracking changes across a 12-set show, and praying that the paperwork actually made it into students' hands before the first run-through. One misplaced binder and a kid is lost for the whole first week of band camp.

She knew the ideal tool was somewhere between the freedom of pencil-and-paper and the distribution power of software. It just didn't exist yet.

What Changed Everything

In the summer of 2024, she had one of those moments that every educator recognizes: the intersection of exhaustion and imagination. It was late July, two weeks before band camp, and she was manually transcribing yard-line coordinates from a hand-drawn sketch into a spreadsheet she'd been using for years. Her coffee had gone cold. A thunderstorm had knocked out the internet. And she found herself asking: "Why can't I just tell it what I want?"

She'd been using AI assistants for lesson planning and had seen how natural language models had evolved. The question that kept replaying in her mind: what if the drill software understood marching band the way she did? What if, instead of clicking through nested menus to build a pinwheel, you could just type "pinwheel on the 45, starts on beat 16" and watch it happen?

That night, she started writing down everything she'd ever wanted from drill software. Not a feature list for a product review — a specification. What it should feel like. How fast it should respond. What it should do automatically so she didn't have to. By morning, she had the foundation of what would become DrillWeaver.
